Trolling With The Homies...

Big Brother 12 is coming soon and the trolls are prepped and ready to go! Salivating, licking their gums, and gnashing their teeth in anticipation of the new houseguests unwittingly entering their noxious grasp, they have waited all year to resurface. Teeming with venom, stupidity, hate, and their preferred weapon of choice, anonymity, they await their next victims.

As much as these new houseguests think they know what they're getting themselves into, they have no idea. Yes, the house itself is stressful. There truly is no preparation for living amongst fourteen complete strangers purposely selected to drive each other nuts, but what lurks outside of the house is truly unexpected. Even the most beloved houseguests will be subjected to their fair share of haters. The trolls do not discriminate because it's not about the person they're attacking; it's more about them spewing the vile hatred they harbor inside at whatever is within striking distance.

Now usually trolls stay within the scope of forums, message boards, comment sections of articles/blogs, etc., but the Big Brother trolls band together and travel far & wide to attack us where we live (well as close as they can get) Twitter, Facebook, P.O. Boxes, & sometimes our personal e-mail addresses. Over the years they've even gone so far as to petition to get houseguests (and their parents) fired from their jobs. They've made it their life's mission to ruin our lives because you see; they have no life of their own. Death threats? Par for the course. Insults? "NIGGAR!", "You diserved to get raped!", & "THAt SERIAL KILLER sHOULD HAVE FINISHED YOu OFF!" were just a few gems hurled at me from behind the keyboards of the trolling cowards. And if you know anything about me, I was more bothered by the misspellings & ALL CAPS than the toxicity launched my way.

The houseguests are playing a game within the confines of a well-decorated fish bowl where every word spoken and action taken is documented for perpetuity.  A game in which lying, manipulation, backstabbing, etc. are sometimes very necessary strategies in order to win; emotions run high, stress is inevitable, mistakes are made, drama ensues and we do it all for the fans of Big Brother...there's no us without them. There's no show without us. Our real lives shouldn't be the subject of troll meddling. Save that for the game. You can't text 1 to get us fired or text 2 to have us meet our early demise.  It's called perspective. Get some. Preferably one less skewed, like... It's a freakin' reality show for your entertainment!

I'm a fan of reality TV as well, my current favorite being the Real Housewives franchise. How good was the catfight that was The Real Housewives of New York City ?! I was enthralled by the bitterness, floored by the craziness, and entranced by the ability of the women to look so fabulously divine while being so downright dirty. Well, Alex's wardrobe was questionable at times, but I digress.

Of course, I picked sides. Primarily Bethenny's over Jill's. That's what you do in reality TV! However, do I hunt down the villainous stars of my favorite shows to unleash an onslaught of rage? No. Unlike trolls, I'm content with my life and myself. And I don't have the time or the inclination.

Reality TV stars are real, three-dimensional people, but reality TV features only the side viewers can mock & hate or love & root for. There is no in between. Naturally, we're seen as caricatures of ourselves wherein people "know" us strictly as one type. Fans of Big Brother get this, go along for the summer ride, add a little snark here & there, and drop the animosity when the season is over. Trolls? All they know is pure malice, atrocious self-loathing, and trolling with their fellow haters, the homies...

Well said, Chima. I'm a massive Big Brother fan and enjoy talking about he game in forums, but keep it at a “game only” level. Whether people agreed with your moves or not, the comments to you stated above were unacceptable, uncalled for, and immoral. You're a beautiful, smart woman and I'm glad you can rise above it all.

Totally well said, Chima. I was not a fan of you on Big Brother but I have a lot of respect for you as a person. I love your professionalism and maturity. Keep it up.

Hi Chima, love the blog and I'm still a fan! It's amazing... you posted a blog about trolls, and the Jokers Updates cows are doing exactly what you expect them to. They're still living in the past. The fact that they still hate after an ENTIRE YEAR is pathetic. You've apologized for what you've done. The true BB fans know it's just a game, and after it ends, then all the negativity should end (at least until the next season). Wishing you all the best dear, and I can't wait to hear your BBAD radio interview! I might just even call in! ;)

I never understood why people who are not even playing the game take the game so seriously and go as far as insulting people personality because of the way they played the game, is so annoying.

It's a shame u were subjected to such cruel & pathetic behavior.I personally adored you.Even when i yelled at my tv,for u 2 "be quiet" and "sit ur ass down" at times(lol)I can't even imagine the level of stress and uncomfortability of being locked in a house with a diverse group of people, playing a game full of scheming and deception while being televised 24/7,possibly being deprived of food and the sincerity of a loved one.I'm sure houseguests walk in with game play and walk out realizing how the game played them.I read ur story and you appear 2 be a very strong, intelligent and determined young woman...very inspiring. You are a survivor, not because of all u've been through, but in spite of.I always thought the "powers to be(at CBS)should have gave you a platform on the finale(even if it had 2 be censored, hey with you,you never know..lol)for it was YOU,who skyrocketed the ratings! You had EVERYONE watching and talking. Well...I said all this to say..Keep in mind,if u ever become overwhelmed by ur "haters" do know that your supporters can carry the same emotions for you,but with positivety. Especially,if i catch their behind on twitter. At times,i feel it is my CIVIC DUTY to "check" a jackass!!!(and i know, you know what i mean) Adore you still, GOD BLESS you in all of your endeavors! I know, i had a lot to say, but it has been a year of holding it all inside(lol)!!! Will b watching u and cheering u on!! LadyTeesReal on twitter!!! Much Success!!

Seriously, people have lost their damn minds. Some folks wake up plotting how to inflict pain on others. What a sad life!

WELL SAID CHIMA!!!! You would have won if it wasn't for the rigging!!! The Coup D' Rig was designed to help Jeff and Jordan since they sucked at the game! Glad you called Grodner and her rigging actions out!

Also, another thing I wanted to add, was that there was a shroud of racism methinks. I posted over at survivorsucks.yuku.com, and you had SOOOOO many supporters, but LOTS of haters too. Most of it was race based however. When people start comparing you to monkeys, and then calling you ghetto bitches, we know it's coming from a place of hatred and ethnocentrism. And, my thing was, how were you 'ghetto?' Obviously, they were using the stereotypical definition of the word, but, you were independent, educated, and had a successful career. Doesn't sound ghetto to me...

The black women on a network show like BB are put under a microscope and any false action is sensationalized beyond belief compared to someone who was white and did the same thing. I mean, Libra and Jameka, who preceded you, were very HATED. Jameka, I had no idea why they hated her, but it's always going to be something. She wasn't an ABW (Angry black woman) but then they found a way to attack her religion and call her a hypocrite for being on a show about lying. It just goes on and on and on and on. Most of the angst against the black women on this show is straight up racism. I mean, I remember when Jeff was hurling homophobic comments left and right at the beginning of last season, but was never reprimanded for it, and in fact his fans celebrated it since he was using it towards Jessie. Yet, Jeff won fan favorite on a rigged twist. THAT's why us true fans want America to stay out of it. AMERICA does not identify with black women so a black woman could NEVER win such a power or would never recieve such an advantage.

Anyway, rant over. I am sick of people attacking the black women on this show, when they obviously aren't perfect, but unconsciously their hate is coming from malicious place filled with hatred, racism, bigotry and prejudice.

Very well-said. It is so amazing that you can have such class in the face of all that disgusting behavior
Hopefully people will gain perspective and learn to let go.
Good luck!

Everything I came to say, has been said. I loved you on the show. You were not 'perfect', but who was? I am not going to make this into a race factor because it is too draining but I just wanted to let you know that you have fans :).

All these people who complain about you should be thanking you because if it weren't for you, there wouldn't be a bb12...nuff said.

Wow Chima, hadn't seen this until today. This really says it all, but we have one thing to add. Not all Big Brother fans are like this. Really, the ones you speak of in this blog are a small but very vocal (and bat shit crazy) minority. Thank you for giving us a perspective on what it's like for the participants who most times are casual fans of the show and are probably mortified once out of the house.

I just stumbled upon your blog and enjoyed your take on the trolls that exist out there.

Unfortunately, the nature of Big Brother, along with the platform, foster this kind of behavior. No other reality tv show allows this level of intimacy with the contestants.

The "live 24 hour feeds" make the feed viewers feel like they are a very real part of the game as they believe they know the players on a more intimate level than other shows. Pseudo relationships are formed between the viewer and the contestants — both positive and negative.

Feed viewers oftentimes develop passionate opinions of who they love and who they hate, and unfortunately it spills over when they get out.

I've been a casual viewer of the feeds over the years, tuning in for endurance comps and every once in awhile when in the mood. But there are those viewers who plan their entire schedules around the feeds, sleep when the house guests sleep, and wake when they wake in the morning.

I think producers need to be more proactive to warn the house guests prior to going in the house of the "fan cults" that will spring up for and against them. Producers and production staff should spend time cautioning the house guests that their behavior in the house will shape the opinions of those watching the feeds.

Personally, I have liked and disliked people based on the edits from the show and what little I have seen on the feeds. After the show, some of those I disliked in the house turn out to be very likeable, and some I really liked turn out to be not at all the person I thought they were.
